The Armorial Bearings Featured in The Vale Royal of England first published by Daniel King in 1656

This first web page illustrates the ecclesiastical arms and those surnames beginning with A.

Abbay of Chester
(See of Chester)
Gules, three mitres labled Or.

[Don't forget that there are also illustrations of the armorial bearings of the Bishops]

Abbay of Combermere
(Drawn on the left as per the depiction by King)
(Combermere Abbey)
Quarterly Gules and Or, a bend Sable over all on the sinister side a crozier in pale of the second (Burkes)

The Burkes blazon for these arms does not draw well as the crozier is the same colour as the second quarter and is therefore not visible - I have therefore drawn
the Burke's version with a sable crozier)

The trick of these arms drawn by King is in the reverse i.e.
Quarterly Or and Gules a bend Sable over all a crozire in pale of the third
King's trick of these arms makes more sense in my view.

Abbay of Norton
(Norton Priory)
Gules a pale fussily Or (King) Illustrated on the left
Gules a pale fussily Or on a bordure Azure eight mitres labled of the second (Burkes) .Illustrated on the right.

[King has drawn a version of the arms of the founder of the Augustinian Priory of the Blessed Virgin at Runcorn, which was in 1134 moved to Norton and in 1442 became an Abbey, William FitzNigel, Lord of Halton who is recorded as using Gules, five lozenges in pale Or.]
